Visiting Franz Josef Glacier and Glacier Country

When visiting New Zealand’s West Coast we hope you are able to spend a few days with us in Franz Josef.

Our campervan park is in the centre of Franz Josef allowing you to park your campervan, caravan or pitch your tent and explore the Village of Franz Josef without having to drive.

Franz Josef is located in the heart of Glacier Country, South Westland New Zealand. Franz Josef is the perfect base to explore Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glacier, Okarito, Lake Matheson and beyond. There is plenty of free walks and activities in the area and the Department of Conservation (DOC) visitor centre and Westland National Park office is directly opposite our entrance in the Glacier Base building.

All of Franz Josef’s restaurants are within 6 minutes walk and the King Tiger Eastern Eating House and Bar is 1 minutes walk – offering drink specials and good value food.

The Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Franz Josef I-site, Glacier Hot Pools and cafe are directly opposite the campervan park in the Glacier Base building.

Franz Josef is home to Skydive Franz who offer the highest skydive in New Zealand with 19 000ft, the Glacier Country Horse Treks, Across Country Quadbikes and Glacier Country Kayaks whose office is right next to the campervan park. A variety of scenic helicopter flight companies (Glacier Helicopters, Franz Heliservices, Glacier Country Helicopters and The Helicopter Line) are based just a few minutes walking from the Glacier Country Campervan Park as well as the West Coast Wildlife Center where you can see New Zealands rarest Kiwi (we have discount vouchers available for flights and the wildlife centre). Guided walks to the glacier and other beautiful places are offered by Glacier Valley Eco Tours and for rainy (and sunny) days we suggest the Greenstone (Jade) carving at Te Koka Gallerys carve your own located a short walk away from the campervan park.

Two of the best day walks in the area are Roberts Point – allow about 5 hours to explore the glacier valley via swing bridges and rainforest tracks taking you high along the side of the Franz Josef Glacier Valley. Alex’s Knob takes about 8 hours – taking you high up the side of the Glacier giving you views towards Mount Cook, Mount Tasman and into the Neve of the Glacier.
